Hunter-Reay, IndyCar featured prominently on Letterman
Uncategorized — By Steph Wallcraft on June 3, 2014 10:26 amIndyCar has been getting some fantastic exposure on late-night television from David Letterman as of late. On top of the traditional Indianapolis 500 interview with this year’s winner, Ryan Hunter-Reay, The Late Show with David Letterman has also aired several genuinely funny segments featuring Todd the Intern goofing around in the IndyCar paddock on Carb Day. (Someone forgot to remind Dave that Carb Day moved to Friday a few years ago, unfortunately.)
It’s not a secret that Letterman is a co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and therefore has a vested interest in giving IndyCar racing some exposure (aside from the fact that he’s one of the sport’s great supporters more generally). That said, it does appear that the show is more willing to air segments on IndyCar than it has been in the past, presumably — and this is pure assumption — at Letterman’s behest as his career winds down.
Let’s hope that trend continues throughout the season. With Letterman having recently announced his retirement next year, it’s not a long bow to draw to assume that getting exposure for the Verizon IndyCar Series and motorsport in general onto late-night television will be a tougher sell from that point forward.
