It’s Bash with you this time. I’ll be covering the race at Sonoma for Planet-IRL this weekend and wanted to share a few thoughts before things get started.

First, not much of a travelogue from me, since I have about 30 miles to drive between my home and Infineon Raceway. I can tell you the area is gorgeous, even when the hills are all brown from the dry season. The local vintners are quite happy for the extended dry, warm days with occasional morning fog – it makes for better wine. If you can’t be here in person, search out a bottle of Sonoma or Napa goodness to enjoy during the race this weekend. The forecast calls for upper 70s during the race weekend, there will probably be some morning fog and it can be quite windy, so if you’re coming out, don’t forget your jacket.

As for the race — well, they do call it Snorenoma and/or Infini-yawn… it’s a tight track with little passing, where qualifying is crucial. And, since Will Power has locked up the road course championship, there’s nothing left to do there but collect the hardware. The thing to watch will be whether Dario Franchitti or Scott Dixon can close the gap on the overall points lead here and then pounce on Power on the ovals that close out the season. Power will want a better result than he had here last year, to say the least. He wants to wipe out the memory of the horrific crash that put him out for the rest of last season by winning here this weekend.

Unfortunately, there are a few limitations to my coverage this weekend. The first is — I won’t be at the track on Friday. Just could not swing the day off work. Second, I don’t make many races and don’t have quite the contacts that Paul and Steph do, so I may not break so much news, but I’ll do my best. Finally, I have recently suffered a back injury that slows me down a good bit. I may have to spend much more time in my media center seat than normal. I will tweet cast what I do see on @SpeedFreakBash, so be sure to follow Saturday and Sunday. Thanks!
