Team to add Detroit race winner as team set for run at 2014 IndyCar Series title
INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 15, 2013) – Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) announced today that Mike Conway has joined the organization as the driver of the No. 20 Chevrolet-powered Dallara Indy car for the road and street course events during the 2014 IndyCar Series.
Conway, 30, is a two-time IndyCar Series winner with victories in 2011 at Long Beach and 2013 at Detroit (first race). The Englishman also won his first pole position at Detroit this year in the second race of the Chevrolet Indy Duals in Detroit at the Belle Isle street circuit.
Ed Carpenter, the IndyCar Series’ only team owner/driver, will continue to pilot the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet for all of the oval races throughout the 2014 campaign. Carpenter also is a two-time IndyCar Series winner with race wins in 2011 at Kentucky and 2012 at Fontana.
“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Mike Conway to the Ed Carpenter Racing family,” said Carpenter. “My partners, (team manager) Tim Broyles, and I are committed to building an organization based on culture, sustainability, and performance. We are very proud of the group of people we have assembled and bringing Mike into the fold creates an opportunity for us to show even more value to our partners and strengthen our team by competing for victories at every single event in the 2014 IndyCar Series.”
“Ed has invested his heart and soul in his organization and is willing to put the team, his employees, and his partners first,” said Eric Timmerman, CEO, Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka. “His commitment to excellence and willingness to invest in the team positions the entire organization, ourselves and other partners included, for long-term success,”
Conway re-confirmed his status as one of the top talents in the sport this past season with a win and third place at the Chevrolet Indy Duals in Detroit, as well as strong drives in both Toronto and Houston in a part-time role for Dale Coyne Racing.
“It is great news to be back in IndyCar next year for all the road and street courses,” said Conway. “I had a lot of fun this year in the select races that I could do and I hope that I can continue my success with Ed Carpenter Racing next year.
“I have to thank my manager, Mark Blundell, at MB Partners for working so hard to make this happen and also thank Ed for bringing me on board and allowing me to take over the ECR Chevrolet car for all of the road and street courses. I look forward to having a great year with them and can’t wait for the season to start again in March.”
This will be Conway’s sixth IndyCar season with 60 career starts including his two victories, four podiums, five top-5 and 18 top-10 finishes.
“I have a great deal of respect for Ed Carpenter to have the vision to put Mike in the car for the street and road tracks,” said Mark Blundell, a former IndyCar race winner. “I think that the blend of his skill sets on the ovals combined with Mike’s talent and pace makes for a very strong combination over the 2014 season.”
